Should I keep reading the Mortal Instruments series?

Will the books get better after the first? I mean, I've read the first one, and completely hated it. Jace and Clary are absolutely the most flat and dull characters I've ever read. Most of my friends practically RAVE about this series, and especially Jace. I just don't get it; sure, there are parts when the dialogue gets funny, but after a while, it gets tiresome. Every damn character never fails to have something witty to say. Not realistic one bit; It's as though the author spent more time thinking of witty comebacks than an original plot! I kept getting that deja vu vibe. I can already tell that Clary and Jace aren't really related, anyone could have guessed that. Do the next two books get better, or worse? The only reason I'm asking about it is because my friends pratically beg me to read the other two.
